Joe – Indie Games, Part 1.

Facade

If there’s one thing the Indie scene doesn’t have to kiss, it’s my ass. I can’t say that I really ‘follow’ the scene, but if something piques my interest it’s usually worth having a look at. Thus, I think it’s worth everyone’s time to have a look at a couple of these interesting games. They’re all free and easily accessible, with only Facade bearing any graphical grunt. I’m aware that these are mostly common choices when it comes to independant games, but for the benefit of those who missed them, here they are.

Passage:

Jason Rohrer’s shocking five minute epic. To talk about it would be to spoil it, but at 200KB there’s no excuse not to play it. Be aware that beneath the message there is a game, so explore a bit.

Syobon action:

Ever felt that a game wasn’t fair? You havn’t seen anything yet. A cruel twist of platforming conventions, this ‘Cat-Mario’ game will leave you wondering whether to laugh or cry.

Facade:

Michael Mateas and Andrew Stern have probably the most critically acclaimed Indie project of recent years on their hands here. With text recognition that would make Microsoft Sam blush, it’s a testiment to the potential of videogame drama.

Super Columbine Massacre RPG:

A game created using the RM2K program, Danny Ledonne has sculpted a disturbingly comprehensive account of the Columbine murderers’ final days. Although not graphically impressive, the game reached the finals of the Slamdance Gamemaker Competition 2007, where it was pulled due to claims the game was in poor taste. It definitely offers some fuel for thought.

Cave Story:

Daisuke Amaya’s freeware game has often been compared to platforming greats such as Castlevania and Metroid, such is its integrity. An english fan translation has been made so now the story and charm can be seen by all. Well, most.
